“Democracy is precious. This region knows it well. And whenever you are called to express yourself and participate in the shaping of the future of your country, you should use it”, the High Representative / Vice-President Federica Mogherini said during her visit to Skopje speaking about the upcoming referendum on 30 September. The referendum should allow citizens to voice their opinion on the name agreement reached in June 2018 between Skopje and Athens. “Remember that when you go and vote at the referendum, you hold the keys to the future of your country. It is in your hands”, she said.

The High Representative reconfirmed that the doors of the European Union were open for the country and its citizens. Speaking about the progress the country has achieved on the path towards the EU, she reminded how unity had brought results for all and appealed to political leaders and citizens to continue to walk in that direction. “You have in your hands the possibility of solving the name issue that has been standing in the way for so long. It is up to you”, the High Representative stressed.

While in Skopje, she met with President Gjorge Ivanov, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and the leader of the VMRO-DPMNE party Hristijan Mickoski.
