Statement by the Spokesperson on the situation in Comoros

Text

In view of the approach which guided the preparation of the referendum of 30 July and the resulting violence, the European Union calls on the Government and the opposition to return to dialogue in order to allow inclusive consultation on constitutional change.

In this context, we support the resolution of the Heads of State of the African Union and the declaration by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission of July 2018 calling for compliance with the Fomboni Agreement and recommending that an agreement be found under the auspices of the African Union.

It is essential that all parties involved are clearly committed to upholding the rule of law and human rights to ensure national unity.
