Text

High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini received the Prime Minister of Mali Soumeylou Boubeye Maïga in Brussels today.

With presidential elections taking place in Mali on 29 July, the High Representative stressed the importance of holding transparent, peaceful and credible elections in order to contribute to the stability of the country. She confirmed that, at the invitation of the Malian government, the European Union is deploying an Election Observation Mission on the ground.

The security situation in Mali and in the region was also discussed. High Representative Mogherini and Prime Minister Maïga discussed the progress made in implementing the Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in Mali and stressed the importance of the EU’s political and financial support in implementing the Agreement.

They also discussed cooperation between the G5 Sahel countries and the EU on security and combating terrorism and organised crime in the region, following the ministerial meeting of 18 June. High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini said that the EU remains ready to step up its support for accelerating measures by the G5 Sahel group, in particular readying the Joint Force for operations, depending on the needs expressed.

Following the recent allegations of infringements of human rights committed in the central regions, including in connection with the operations of the G5 Sahel group’s Joint Force, Ms Mogherini welcomed the commitment and the action of the Malian authorities to tackle this situation.

The migration issue was also discussed. The High Representative welcomed the constructive partnership between the EU and Mali to protect migrants from human smugglers, combat networks of traffickers and guarantee financial support for the development of the country. They both stressed that an approach based on cooperation and partnership must prevail in order to meet the respective interests of the two sides.

High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini said, finally, that the European Union was prepared to step up its support for Mali in order to advance peace and reconciliation throughout the country and contribute to socio-economic development for the benefit of all Malians.
