Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, met today in Brussels with the Foreign Minister of Qatar, Sheik Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani.

They discussed the positive bilateral relations between the European Union and Qatar and the next steps in the implementation of the Cooperation Arrangement signed on 7 March 2018 during the visit of the Emir of Qatar. In this regard, it was agreed to establish an informal dialogue on Human Rights as a way to step up bilateral dialogue, as foreseen in the Cooperation Arrangement, and to complement the regular exchanges between EU institutions and the Qatari National Human Rights Commission.

They also exchanged views on a number of topics of common interest, including the situation in the Gulf region, Libya and the Middle East Peace Process.

On the Gulf crisis, High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini reiterated the EU support to an intra-Gulf negotiated solution and Kuwait’s mediation in this regard and stressed that the security and stability dividends deriving from a return to GCC unity would not be limited to the region, but go far beyond and serve the overall interests of the international community.
