High Representative Federica Mogherini met today with Roch Kaboré, the President of Burkina Faso, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alpha Barry, during European Development Days. They discussed the situation in Burkina Faso, which has been particularly affected by terrorist attacks in the capital Ouagadougou and in the Burkinabe Sahel region.
High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini reaffirmed the European Union's support for the country's development and security, notably through an additional contribution of EUR 50 million to implement the Emergency Plan for the Sahel. The importance of respect for human rights in order to ensure the security of the region was also underlined.
President Kaboré and High Representative Mogherini then discussed cooperation between the EU and the G5 Sahel countries with the aim of strengthening cross-border cooperation and the fight against terrorism in the region.
The High Representative/Vice-President confirmed to the President that a part of the European contribution had recently been disbursed in support of the G5 Sahel Joint Force.
They are committed to cooperating closely on this common agenda
