Today, the High Representative / Vice President Federica Mogherini met with President João Lourenço of Angola together with Minister for Foreign Affairs, Manuel Augusto.
The meeting was an opportunity to discuss EU-Angola relations and the important cooperation in some areas such as maritime security and fight against piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. The High Representative / Vice President Mogherini re-affirmed the EU's will to support Angola's current reforms on economic and social areas. Both also looked forward to the next EU-Angola Ministerial meeting due to take place in Autumn under the 'Joint Way Forward' partnership.
Mogherini and Lourenço also discussed the regional situation, notably in Angola's capacity of current chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security. They exchanged views on the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic. The High Representative / Vice President stressed on the need to continue coordinating closely with Angola, the SADC as well as the region and support the African Union's work in order to encourage stability and peace in the region.
