Statement on the municipal elections in Tunisia

The municipal elections of 6 May 2018, the first democratic local elections in the country, are a major step in the consolidation of Tunisia's democracy and in the ambitious decentralisation process set out in the 2014 Constitution.

The European Union is fully committed to supporting these elections. Unusually for local elections, a European Union Election Observation Mission was deployed from 6 April 2018, led by Chief Observer Fabio Massimo Castaldo, Vice‑President of the European Parliament, and made up of 124 observers from all EU Member States, Switzerland, Canada and Norway. They were able to testify to the orderly conduct of the elections.

Following the adoption of the new local government code in Tunisia on 26 April 2018, the European Union is committed to supporting the development of the capacities of the new local authorities. These authorities will play an important role in consolidating democratic participation at local level, while listening to and serving the needs of the citizens.

The European Union stands firm in its support for a democratic, stable and prosperous Tunisia. The European Union remains committed to accompanying the ongoing reforms in Tunisia, in order to ensure the sustainability of the democratic transition process for the benefit of the citizens of Tunisia.
