Statement on the establishment of a national dialogue in Nicaragua

Text

The establishment of a national dialogue that is due to begin on Wednesday 16th May is a very positive sign for Nicaragua. The dialogue is promoted by the Catholic Church and envisages the participation of all political forces. The decision by the government to invite the Inter-American Human Rights Commission to visit the country is another necessary step to verify and uphold the human rights situation in Nicaragua. The EU hopes that this visit can take place as soon as possible.

Despite these encouraging developments, violence has continued in different parts of the country. More deaths and injuries and widespread clashes are reported daily. The European Union expresses its sympathy to families of victims.

In order for dialogue to proceed under peaceful conditions and to guarantee the safety of participants, the police should avoid excessive force and armed groups must be reined in. Freedom of expression and the ability to protest peacefully should be respected, while all parties exercise restraint.

The EU reiterates its support for an inclusive dialogue on justice and democracy as the way out of the current crisis.
