Statements by the Spokesperson

In the last few days, a significant number of Malian civilians have been killed in the north of the country.

We offer our sincere condolences to the families of the victims of this act, which seeks to derail the peace and reconciliation process in Mali and sow discord among the national community.

The perpetrators must be arrested and prosecuted. The European Union recalls that any attack against the civilian population constitutes a breach of international law that may also be subject to the sanctions regime established pursuant to United Nations Security Council resolution 2374 (2017).

The European Union continues to stand by the Malian people and authorities in the fight against the terrorist threat in Mali and across the whole region, in support of their efforts to build a peaceful, prosperous future for all citizens.
