Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, met today with Venezuela's Minister of Foreign Affairs and will meet next week the President of the National Assembly, together with representatives of main opposition parties.
In the meeting with the Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs Jorge Arreaza, the High Representative underlined a very clear expectation of the European Union for the Government of Venezuela to seriously engage towards a broad consensus that allows the holding of credible presidential and regional elections. Such elections should ensure the participation of all political parties, without obstacles, under equal conditions and in conformity with the Venezuelan Constitution and international standards.
Furthermore, the deteriorating economic and social situation affecting the Venezuelan population needs to be addressed urgently. Federica Mogherini reiterated the EU's readiness to provide additional support.
Finally, the High Representative stressed that a democratic and negotiated solution in respect of the Venezuelan Constitution, the rule of law and human rights is the only way to resolve the multidimensional crisis in the country, and that non-inclusive decisions will only exacerbate the polarisation and create obstacles.
The meeting today took place in the context of the ongoing contacts with the government, the National Assembly as well as with regional partners, aiming at promoting inclusive, transparent and credible elections that are based on an electoral calendar and guarantees that result from a wide agreement with all main political organisations.
