Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the latest developments regarding Korean Peninsula

Text

The recent positive developments with regard to the situation on the Korean Peninsula are very welcome. The European Union is encouraged by the announcement of a Summit meeting between Republic of Korea's President Moon and DPRK leader Kim Jong-un in April and fully supports the efforts of the Republic of Korea in this regard. In this context, we are looking forward to a discussion with Foreign Minister of RoK Kang Kyung-wha at the Foreign Affairs Council on 19 March. Furthermore, President Trump's readiness to accept Kim Jong Un's invitation to a Summit meeting by May also represents a positive development. We are awaiting the outcomes of these summit meetings.

We have noted the DPRK's reported commitment to enter into negotiations on denuclearisation and refrain from testing nuclear weapons or missiles during these negotiations - if corroborated, these announcements could create the necessary conditions towards a negotiated solution. The European Union continues to fully support the objective of the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
