From 22 to 26 January 2018, Lithuania and Austria organised a CSDP Orientation Course in Brussels. The Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Instrument (TAIEX) of the European Commission co-hosted this event, which was held under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC).

The one-week course was an integral part of the fifth cycle of the CSDP Training Programme for the Eastern Partnership (EaP). The training programme will conclude with a CSDP reflection seminar in Tbilisi, Georgia in March 2018.

In total 44 'students' attended the training; 25 participants came from the EaP countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine) and 19 from the EU Member States. In one week, the course informed about the state of affairs of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, the challenges ahead and the latest developments about PESCO (Permanent Structured Cooperation) and CARD (Coordinated Annual Review on Defence), both instruments designed to build on the momentum of European defence and stimulate cooperation in security and defence.

A course participant from an Eastern Partnership country concluded after the course: 'The knowledge obtained during the course is very useful for my work in the sphere of European integration especially for future implementation of Ministry of the Interior's Development strategy in line with the principles of CSDP.'
