Today's signing of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement between the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the New Mon State Party and the Lahu Democratic Union is an important step forward in bringing peace to the people of Myanmar.
As a long-standing partner and active supporter of Myanmar's peace process, the European Union signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement of 15 October 2015 as an international witness. We are proud to have also signed today's agreement in the same capacity.
An inclusive peace process is vital. Today's agreement sends a signal to all stakeholders in Myanmar that the only viable option is to engage in dialogue and negotiations. This will necessitate compromise on all sides. In order to build trust and create a conducive environment for such talks, all parties must end military operations, particularly in Kachin State and northern Shan State where clashes are ongoing. Full and unconditional humanitarian access to affected populations must be granted without delay.
The people of Myanmar in every corner of the country, regardless of background or faith, deserve peace and prosperity. The European Union will continue to accompany this process, to support peace in Myanmar and work to make it a reality.
