Text

Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission today met with Mr Iurie Leanca, the newly-appointed Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration of the Republic of Moldova.

The High Representative/Vice-President and the Deputy Prime Minister discussed the latest developments in EU-Moldova relations. The High Representative/Vice-President highlighted the importance of following the recommendations of international partners in key areas related to reforms and democracy in the country. The EU is closely following developments with regard to the electoral framework, the media sector, and the major banking fraud unveiled in 2014, where essential tasks such as criminal investigations and recovering misappropriated funds have not been completed.

High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini emphasised that the EU remains committed to the implementation of the Association Agreement, but that progress in key reform areas such as the judiciary and the fight against corruption needs to be made to unlock its benefits for all citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
