The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/ Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini met today with the Minister of State and Counsellor of National Security of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta.
The meeting was held in the margins of the 4th Political Dialogue between the EU and Timor-Leste, which was co-chaired by Mr Ramos-Horta, former Foreign Minister, Prime Minister, and President of Timor-Leste as well as Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and his counterpart in the European External Action Service, Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific, Mr Gunnar Wiegand. The Political Dialogue took place under Article 8 of the Cotonou Agreement, providing an opportunity to reflect on the positive state of bilateral relations as well as regional challenges and opportunities in an open and constructive manner.
During the dialogue, both sides reiterated their determination to reinforce co-operation between the EU and Timor-Leste. The EU continues to support democracy, peace and stability in the country and provide assistance under two focal sectors: good governance and rural development. They highlighted the engagement of Timor-Leste in the Universal Periodic Review process and its commitment to the early ratification of the applicable international Human Rights instruments. The need to pursue efforts to tackle the remaining development challenges, such as diversification of the Timorese economy, including investing in human capital, was also stressed.
The High Representative/Vice President re-confirmed the EU's commitment to continue to pursue strong political and development co-operation. The EU will remain a strong partner to Timor-Leste.
