Statement by the spokesperson on the third round of dialogue on Venezuela
The third round of dialogue between the opposition and the government of Venezuela hosted by the President of Dominican Republic will take place this week, on 11 and 12 January, in Santo Domingo.
The EU fully supports an effective and results oriented negotiating process facilitated and accompanied by countries in the region.
It is vital to seize this momentum to reach agreed solutions to address the pressing needs of the population. This can only be obtained with a serious engagement and a spirit of compromise from all parties.
We expect the government of Venezuela to engage in a flexible and constructive manner in the negotiation and to spare no efforts to deliver concrete results from this meeting, and the opposition to work in a united manner, in the interest of the people of Venezuela. It is imperative that all sides redouble their commitment to dialogue and reconciliation.
The EU will continue to seek urgent relief for the people of Venezuela and promote a political solution to the crisis based on reforms leading to credible elections, the release of political prisoners, the respect for democratically elected bodies and the upholding of human rights. To this end, it is using all available instruments and is ready to step up its actions
