Statement by the Spokesperson following the announcement by the Honduran Supreme Electoral Court

The announcement of the electoral results by the Supreme Electoral Court was a significant step in a complex and uncertain process.

The EU has closely followed the elections, and its Electoral Observation Mission (EU EOM) has accompanied the different stages of the electoral process since the beginning of October 2017. The EU EOM will continue to follow the developments on the ground, including any appeals which may be entered.

In the coming months, the EU EOM will issue its final report, which will include a thorough and factual assessment of the electoral process and recommendations based on best practices at international level and the specificities of the country. We believe that their acceptance and implementation, along with those of the Electoral observation mission from 2013 EOM, could contribute to restore the much-needed public confidence in future electoral processes.

All national stakeholders are expected to genuinely participate in this process for the sake of consolidating democracy, achieving political stability and contributing to the sustainable and inclusive development of Honduras and its institutional framework.

We encourage the Honduran authorities to focus all efforts on overcoming the prevailing polarisation through inclusive dialogue between political, economic and social forces.

In line with our long-term commitment to the country, we stand ready to work together with all stakeholders and will continue our engagement in support of key areas such as Rule of Law and Human Rights.
