In order to prepare the EU Presidency team for the second half of 2018, Austria organised a CSDP orientation course in Vienna. In addition to the Austrian EU Presidency team, the hosts invited participants from other EU Member States and from the Eastern Partnership countries. The latter were sponsored via the Technical Assistance and Information Exchange instrument of the European Commission.

53 students heard lectures, analysis and comments on the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union from 23 EU experts. The former Director-General of the EU Military Staff, General Wolfgang Wosolsobe, briefed the students on recent CSDP developments, in particular the involvement of the European Commission in this field. The former EU Ambassador Marc Franco explained the consequences of BREXIT and possible ways ahead. He also provided the students with detailed information about the upcoming challenges in the negotiations between the EU and Great Britain.

The topic 'capability development' was presented by Mr. Petteri Taitto, Col(GS) Herbert Sailer and Dr. Jochen Rehrl.

Wednesday afternoon was dedicated to the social event, which started with a city tour, a visit to a traditional 'Christkindl-Markt' (Christmas market) and a guided tour of the military museum of Vienna. The participants used the time to network and get to know each other better in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, far away from the lecture room. The evening ended in a Viennese 'Heurigen', a wine tavern offering traditional food from Austria.

The course was conducted at the military premises of the Austrian National Defence Academy in the centre of Vienna. The ESDC training event was moderated by Dr. Jochen Rehrl, and was the 50th such orientation course he had organised. The Director of the Military Policy Division, General Reinhard Trischak, congratulated him on this achievement.
