The European Union celebrated Human Rights Day together with the Public Defender's Office and the United Nations on Sunday 10 December.

In his video address Janos Herman, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, said, “Human rights are at the heart of Georgia’s association with the European Union. We are convinced that the respect for and active defence of human rights will promote all other objectives of our cooperation. It is important for both Georgia and Europe.

On Sunday, 10 December, the Public Defender's Office, the European Union and the United Nations organised a special event in the centre of Tbilisi to commemorate Human Rights Day. During the event, Public Defender Nino Lomjaria said that she will ensure that human rights are well-protected in Georgia.

Speaking at the event, Dorota Dlouchy-Suliga, Head of Political Section at the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia, said "Georgia has made progress on a number of issues related to Human Rights protection in recent years. One of the highlights of 2017 was the ratification of the Istanbul Convention on Combatting Violence against Women. The EU has contributed to the process and will continue to support Georgia in advancing human rights to the benefit of all citizens. We are looking forward to working with the new Ombudsperson Nino Lomjaria in this respect."

Vladimir Shkolnikov, UN Resident Coordinator a.i., emphasized, "Georgia is a proud member of various international human rights bodies. Its international partners are helping the country become an example of human rights protection in the region."

Citizens were invited to get informed and stand up for human rights in Georgia.

EU support for Human Rights in Georgia

The European Union is founded on a strong engagement to promote and protect human rights, democracy and the rule of law worldwide. Sustainable peace, development and prosperity cannot exist without respect for human rights.

The European Union supports the protection of human rights in Georgia through the 30 million GEL programme “Human Rights for All”, which supports and promotes the implementation and monitoring of the National Human Rights Strategy and Action Plan ‎2014-2020.

Human Rights Day:

Human Rights Day, December 10, is observed worldwide every year to commemorate the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The 2017 slogan of Human Rights Day is “Promote, Engage and Reflect”, built upon the stand-up call to action #standup4humanrights.
