High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini to host meeting at political level of the EU–AU–UN Task Force on 14th December

Following up on the commitment to accelerate the joint work to address the dramatic situation of migrants and refugees, the High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini has invited the African Union Commissioner for Social Affairs Amira ElFadil, the International Organisation for Migration Director General William Lacey Swing and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi to continue the discussions already initiated in Addis during the first meeting of the task force of 4 December on the concrete steps to urgently assist migrants to voluntarily return from Libya to their country of origin and people in need of international protection to be resettled through the UNHCR evacuation transit mechanism.

The joint work to save and protect migrants and refugees along the routes will also be part of their agenda.

They will also discuss on how to intensify the common fight against smugglers and traffickers more effectively as well as measures to end impunity of criminals.

The Taskforce was established last week, on 29 November, in the margins of the AU–EU Summit in Abidjan to upgrade in a systematic manner the trilateral cooperation between the three organisations.
