High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini held today a phone conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the expected announcement by President Trump on the status of Jerusalem.
High Representative Mogherini reassured President Abbas of the firm position of the European Union that the final status of Jerusalem as future capital of both states has to be settled through negotiations that fulfil the aspiration of the parties. She also reiterated the European Union's commitment to the resumption of a meaningful peace process towards a two state solution as the only perspective guaranteeing peace and security both to Palestinians and Israelis.
Federica Mogherini called for restraint in any reaction to the expected announcement and welcomed the commitment by President Abbas to call for any demonstrations to remain peaceful.
After so many decades, Palestinians and Israelis deserve to find an overdue peaceful and sustainable settlement of the conflict. To this end, the European Union will increase its work to keep the path to a peaceful solution open, closely coordinating with the United Nations, international partners, including within the Quartet and the Region, the EU member states, and Norway. In this perspective, High Representative Mogherini extended an invitation to President Abbas to meet the EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels in January which President Abbas has accepted.
