Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, spoke this morning by phone with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea, Ms Kang Kyung-wha.
High Representative Mogherini and Foreign Minister Kang discussed the situation in the Korean peninsula following the launch of an inter-continental ballistic missile by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on 28 November. The High Representative stressed the need for the international unity to deal with the grave provocations by the DPRK and the full implementation of all relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The international community should exert maximum pressure on the DPRK so they engage in a credible and meaningful dialogue, aimed at pursuing the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
The High Representative and the Foreign Minister coordinated their joint work ahead of the Ministerial-level meeting of the UN Security Council later this month and the Foreign Ministers meeting in Canada early next year.
The High Representative will discuss the situation in the Korean peninsula with Canadian Foreign Minister Freeland on Monday and with US Secretary Tillerson on Tuesday.
High Representative Mogherini and Foreign Minister Kang agreed to remain in close contact over the coming weeks.
