Statements by the Spokesperson

"The agreement between all parties, announced in Ouagadougou on 5 November 2014, on the underlying principles of a political transition led by civilian figures to allow the prompt restoration of constitutional order, is a step in the right direction.

The commitment of ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations has been a crucial part of this process, in particular the African Union statement of 3 November and then the Extraordinary Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on 6 November, which also discussed the role of the army.

A successful transition now depends on two key points:

- that all parties concerned take part in the necessary dialogue to fully implement this agreement.

- that a civilian and consensus-based transitional government is established quickly in order to avoid potential sanctions.

If these conditions are met, there will be no need for sanctions against those who could prevent the restoration of constitutional order.

The European Union also welcomes the creation of an ECOWAS Contact Group on Burkina Faso, chaired by President Macky Sall. In this context, the EU stands ready to work with the Contact Group to support the return to constitutional order as soon as possible".
