On 19 November, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini was in Bangladesh. She visited Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox's Bazar where she met with representatives of humanitarian organisations and with a group of Rohingya women who recently fled Myanmar (transcript here, video here), and in Dhaka held a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Mrs Sheikh Hasina.
The High Representative reiterated the European Union's support to the Bangladeshi authorities for providing assistance to those who have fled Northern Rakhine State. The European Union and its Member States provided over half of the overall pledge at the UN conference in Geneva, which was co-hosted by the EU on 23 October. The ongoing EU financial support to the Rohingya refugees and host communities in both Bangladesh and Myanmar in 2017 amounts to €51 million.
The High Representative/Vice-President also stressed that the EU's support aims at creating all necessary conditions, in both Myanmar and Bangladesh, for voluntary, safe and dignified return of Rohingya to their place of origin, including through registration in Bangladesh. Her participation at the Asia-Europe Meeting of Foreign Ministers on 20-21 November in Nai Pyi Taw will provide an opportunity to address the situation with the Myanmar authorities in person.
