The announcement of the election timetable opens the cycle of elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that must lead to a democratic transition.
The authorities and institutions in charge of organising the elections are now responsible for the effective implementation of the calendar, through a legitimate and consensual process involving all political and civil actors.
Dialogue and the rejection of all use of violence must prevail.
In order to establish credible and inclusive election conditions, it is vital that measures necessary to ease political tensions are implemented, in accordance with the Constitution and the agreement of 31 December 2016.
In this context, the European Union will work with Congolese actors and their partners, in particular the United Nations, the African Union, the Southern African Development Community and the International Organisation for the French-Speaking World, in order to help achieve this goal.
The European Union is part of the joint team of experts tasked with supporting the implementation of the electoral process, in accordance with the communiqué of the meeting held in the margins of the General Assembly of the United Nations on 19 September 2017.
