During the Safety and Security Awareness Training course, training manager Irene-Maria Eich, from the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), and security policy expert Jens Kolmos Serritslev, from the Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability (CPCC), visited the Field Office Gori (FOG) on 11 October 2017.

Prior to going on a patrol, the head of the field office, Hans-Heinrich Schneider, briefed the visitors on the FOG's area of responsibility and on issues related to the security and safety measures taken while planning, preparing and conducting a patrol.

This real-life experience gave the visitors a comprehensive insight into the mission.

The patrol started in Zemo Nikozi, where the group had a view over Tskhinvali and could monitor the ground activities. After observing 'borderisation' features in Ditsi, the patrol continued to Zardiantkari to see a crossing point and a village community that had been divided as a result of the administrative border line (ABL). At the last destination in Gugutiantkari, land issues were the focus of the patrol's attention.

This real-life experience gave the visitors a comprehensive insight into the mission and added an important dimension to their overall understanding of the mission's mandate. It also illustrated the direct link between the skills required of mission staff to fulfil their tasks and the in-mission training provided to bring incoming staff up to operational standard.

The professionalism, team spirit and positive working atmosphere at Field Office Gori were impressive.
