The High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini received the Prime Minister of Mali, His Excellency Abdoulaye Idrissa Maïga, in Brussels on 12 October to discuss matters of mutual concern: the implementation of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, the security situation in Mali and in the region, and cooperation to boost stability and development in the country. Following the presentation on EU-backed investment in support of the population, the High Representative/Vice-President said that the measures should be stepped up to maximise their impact on the people of Mali and bolster the State’s presence throughout the country. She also drew attention to the new development opportunities opened up by the EU External Investment Plan. She also made reference to the local and regional elections in Mali in December 2017 and the general election in 2018. The HR/VP and the Malian Prime Minister welcomed the cooperation of the G5 Sahel group, currently chaired by Mali, in the field of security and the fight against terrorism and organised crime in the region. High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini reiterated the EU’s firm support for measures by the G5 Sahel group to step up security, particularly through the Joint Force.
