Statement by the Spokesperson on the elections in Liberia

On 10 October, peaceful presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Liberia. The European Union has closely followed the process that marks a new chapter in the democratic history of the country.

The elections were inclusive and adequately conducted thanks to the positive role of the electoral administration and of political parties.

This is above all thanks to Liberian citizens who have demonstrated a strong commitment through their participation in this democratic process. Domestic observers deployed across the country also contributed positively to the electoral process.

It is now important that the on-going tallying of election results is done in a transparent manner and that candidates and parties commit to use the existing legal mechanisms in case of any electoral grievances.

The EU is a partner of Liberia and is determined to continue supporting the strengthening of democracy and good governance in Liberia. An EU Election Observation Mission, headed by Chief Observer Maria Arena, a Member of the European Parliament, has been deployed to Liberia and will remain in the country until the end of the electoral process.
