Strikes on civilian areas in the neighbourhood of Ahrab in Sanaa have been reported, resulting in a high civilian death toll and many injured. Our thoughts and condolences go to the families of the victims.
Once more innocent civilians pay an unacceptable price for the prolonged conflict. We therefore renew our call on all parties to ensure the protection of civilians through the respect of humanitarian law and international human rights law in the conduct of hostilities as well as proper investigation into possible violations in order to hold those responsible accountable.
After over two years of conflict, Yemen has become one of the most dramatic humanitarian crises in the world, combining famine, cholera and violence. Hostilities have ravaged the country and undermined the stability of the whole region. There is no military solution to this conflict and it is increasingly urgent that the parties agree on a ceasefire and lay the groundwork for the resumption of peace negotiations. The EU stands ready to support the efforts of the UN in that direction.
