The European Union takes note of the provisional results of the presidential election on 11 October, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission of the Republic of Guinea.
The high turnout and the peaceful conduct of the vote demonstrate the will of the people of Guinea to exercise their democratic rights in a climate of calm, despite the significant logistical and organisational difficulties identified in the preliminary statement of the European Union's Election Observation Mission (EOM) in Guinea.
Until the final results are known, it is important for all the players to act responsibly and for the country to remain calm. Resorting to violence is never justified. Any challenge to the outcome of the election must follow the appropriate legal channels.
The EU Election Observation Mission will continue its work until the process has been completed, in order to observe post-election developments, including the handling of infringements and possible legal actions. It will present a final report containing all its observations and recommendations in the weeks following the end of the electoral process.
