The political situation in the Republic of the Congo and the demonstrations that followed the announcement by President Sassou Nguesso of the organisation of a constitutional referendum threaten the stability of the country.
Freedom of speech and freedom of association must be preserved. Violence can never be the answer to the challenge facing the country.
An inclusive dialogue is the only way to reach a broad consensus on a matter of national interest like an amendment to the constitution. It must take place in accordance with the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance and the undertakings adopted within the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS).
Against this background, the European Union gives its full support to the recent statement by the Chair of the African Union Commission on the current developments in the Republic of the Congo. The EU calls on the Government and all stakeholders to establish as a matter of urgency the conditions for such a dialogue, which should also lead to better electoral governance for the forthcoming elections.
