Statement by the Spokesperson on the entry into force of the new Criminal Code of Chad

The European Union welcomes the new provisions incorporated into the new Criminal Code of Chad, such as those prohibiting child marriage and female genital mutilation, criminalising slavery and human trafficking and defining torture, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity as criminal offences.

It notes that the criminalisation of same-sex relationships provided for in the Criminal Code is incompatible with the Government of Chad’s international human rights commitments.

The European Union emphasises the importance of all the measures taken by Chad to strengthen equality before the law and non-discrimination in line with international agreements, particularly the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, to which Chad is a signatory.

The European Union is willing to pursue dialogue with the Chadian authorities to that end.
