European Union External Action

Joint statement by HR/VP Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica on the worsening situation in Burundi

Following the attacks on military bases last Friday, the security forces carried out operations this weekend which killed many people, including in summary executions.

All these severe attacks must be thoroughly investigated so that the perpetrators can be identified and held to account.

The dramatic deterioration in the situation requires a determined response.  In the first place, a political process must be started by means of an inter-Burundian dialogue, mediated by Uganda with the help of the African Union.  In consultation with the Ugandan and African Union authorities, the European Union has decided to make available a financial contribution to allow this dialogue to begin immediately. The EU expects all Burundian stakeholders to respond positively to the invitation and renounce violence.

The United Nations Security Council and the African Union's Peace and Security Council are examining the situation. It is crucial that they take action to avoid fresh losses of life and the spread of unrest through the region.
