Statement by the Spokesperson on the adoption by the Tunisian Parliament of the law on violence against women

'The Assembly of the Representatives of the People of Tunisia took a major step forward in the democratic transition process when the members present unanimously adopted an ambitious law to combat violence against women. The much anticipated text is the latest crucial step towards achieving full respect for human rights and equal opportunities for men and women. It stands as an example of the implementation of the Tunisian Constitution and the observance by Tunisia of its international commitments to respect and promote human rights.

The European Union fully supports this process and will stand alongside the Tunisian people in its commitment to the effective implementation of the new law.'
