High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini met the President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron today, on the sidelines of the Balkans Summit in Trieste.

The situation in the Sahel was broached by them both. The High Representative stressed the importance of working in partnership with the Sahel countries to boost action to promote security, stability and development in the region. The High Representative confirmed that she would be taking part in the launch of the Alliance for the Sahel in Paris tomorrow, in the context of the Franco-German Ministerial Council.

Progress towards a Europe of Defence was also welcomed. Federica Mogherini stressed the need for speedy implementation of specific industrial projects that would make for progress on the European Defence Policy.

The situation in the Gulf was discussed. Stress was laid on the importance of solving the current crisis though political dialogue, and on support for Kuwaiti mediation.

On Ukraine, the High Representative pointed to the scale of EU action in support of reform in the country and the need to implement the Minsk agreements.

Lastly, the High Representative/Vice-President and the President of the French Republic discussed the situation in the Balkans, welcoming the tangible commitments made at the Trieste Summit.
