Statement by the Spokesperson on the election of the transitional President in Haiti

The election of Mr Jocelerme Privert as the interim President of the Republic of Haiti by both chambers of the National Assembly within the time frame laid down by the political agreement, shows the determination of the Haitian authorities to provide the country with stable and legitimate institutions by means of calm and peaceful dialogue.

The European Union reiterates its support for the work of the transitional authorities, whose main task will be to ensure the success of the electoral process and the election of a new President by the citizens of Haiti no later than 14 May, thereby securing political stability.

This political stability is essential for guaranteeing the security of the people and also for committing the country to urgent reforms. These reforms will put Haiti on a path towards better governance and economic, social and environmental development that will benefit its entire population.
