Statement by the spokesperson on the latest attacks in Sadr City and Mahmoudiya, Iraq

"The multiple terrorist attacks committed by Daesh on Sunday in Sadr City and in Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad, have killed a large number of people and wounded many others who were going about their daily business.
We extend our condolences to the families and friends of the victims and wish a full recovery to those injured in the attacks.
These attacks are a demonstration of and a clear response to the military setbacks and major territorial losses suffered by Daesh.
All parties opposing Daesh in Iraq must not yield to these provocations aimed at sowing sectarian discord.
The only effective response in the fight against Daesh is to unite Iraqis around the project of a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive Iraq, and to continue international support through the Global Coalition, of which the EU is a part.
The EU expresses its solidarity with the Iraqi people at this difficult moment and will continue to support Iraq with all the humanitarian, stabilisation, development and security means available to it."
