The European Union strongly supports the negotiations on a settlement for Cyprus and will keep doing so in this crucial phase.

This was the message delivered by High Representative Federica Mogherini, who Tuesday evening joined the working dinner opening the new round of the Conference on Cyprus under UN auspices, in Crans Montana, Switzerland.

Hosted by Espen Barth Eide, Special Advisor on Cyprus to the UN Secretary General, the dinner brought together the leaders of the two Cypriot communities, Mr Anastasiades and Mr Akinci, and the guarantor countries - Greek Foreign Minister Kotzias, Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu and UK Foreign Secretary Johnson.

The EU, a strong supporter of the UN-facilitated settlement talks, is present as an observer at the Conference with a team that will stay during the entire session of the Conference, providing the expertise of all EU institutions and services.

European Commission First Vice-President Timmermans President is at the opening of the Conference today, representing President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.
