At the invitation of the Government of Zimbabwe, the European Union established a mission to observe the parliamentary elections in Zimbabwe on 24 and 25 June 2000.

The EU EOM was headed by Chief Observer Pierre Schori (MEP). The EU operation was the largest international electoral observation mission in the country. More than a hundred observers were deployed during the first week of June for a six-week period. The rest arrived in the country about a week before the elections.

The observers were deployed throughout the country. They met government and electoral officials, candidates and political parties, civil society representatives and the media.
