EU election observation mission to Ecuador in 2002

At the invitation of the Government of Ecuador, the European Union established a mission to observe the presidential, parliamentary and local elections there on 20 October and 24 November 2002.

The mission was headed by the Chief Observer Emma Bonino, member of the European Parliament. The 2002 national elections were of historic importance in the consolidation of Ecuador’s democracy.

The observers were deployed throughout the country. They met government and electoral officials, candidates and political parties, civil society representatives and the media.
