The Extraordinary African Assize Appeal Chamber upheld the life sentence for crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture handed down by the Extraordinary African Assize Chamber to former Chadian President Hissène Habré on 30 May 2016.

This verdict on appeal brings a historic trial to a definitive close, setting a major precedent for international justice and the fight against impunity in Africa and elsewhere in the world.

The Senegalese authorities, associations of victims' families and Human Rights Watch have demonstrated a real determination to bring the trial to a conclusion.

The EU, together with the African Union, Senegal and Chad, has constantly supported and contributed to the organisation of the trial.
