At the invitation of the Government of Nigeria, the European Union established a mission to observe the state and federal elections there on 14 and 21 April 2007.

The Election Observation Mission observed the governorship and state assembly elections held on 14 April, and the presidential and national assembly elections held a week later on 21 April.

The elections fell far short of basic international standards. They were marred by poor organisation, lack of essential transparency, widespread procedural irregularities, significant evidence of fraud, particularly during the result collation process, voter disenfranchisement at different stages of the process, lack of equal conditions for contestants and numerous incidents of violence.

The Chief Observer was Max van den Berg (Netherlands), Member of the European Parliament.
