EU election observation mission to Guinea Bissau in 2008

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) was deployed in Guinea-Bissau
on 4 October 2008 by invitation of the National Election Commission (Comissão Nacional
de Eleiçõse, CNE).

The EU EOM was headed by Johan Van Hecke, Member of the European Parliament, and is composed of 51 observers from 15 EU member states. The observers were deployed to all nine regions of Guinea Bissau to assess the electoral process in accordance with international principles for democratic elections. On election day, 16 November 2008, the observers visited 262 polling stations in all 27 constituencies (círculos eleitorais) to observe voting and counting.
