EU election expert mission to South Africa in 2009

Increased competition characterised the fourth general election in South Africa. Predictions that the 2009 general elections would be negatively influenced by violence did not materialise.

While EU EEMs analyse all frameworks and phases of the electoral cycle, having regards to the relevant recognised international standard, they are of a technical nature. They do not conduct direct observation. They are not headed by political figure and do not deliver public statements or press releases. They provide a technical document for the EU institutions and Member States that reports on the country’s specific electoral situation.
