Mogherini stresses key role of EU-China cooperation in a multilateral world

18/04/2017 - 14:18

The importance of cooperation between the EU and China in the face of international challenges will be a key theme of EU High Representative / European Commission Vice-President Federica Mogherini's visit to China. The visit marks the third time Mogherini has been in Beijing and she began by meeting Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang on Tuesday morning for talks.

The High Representative is in Beijing to chair the 7th EU-China Strategic Dialogue with Chinese State Councillor Yang Jiechi on 19 April. The meeting will be in preparation for the 19th EU-China Summit in Brussels in June.

Among the issues to be discussed at the Strategic Dialogue are climate change as well as regional and security issues.

At the start of her visit Mogherini was interviewed by the "Xinhua" Chinese News Agency. She told them: "The European Union and China share the view of a global order based on multilateralism and on the UN system: our cooperation has never been so important, in a moment when multilateral global governance is put in question from many sides."

"China can play a very positive role on so many fields, from Afghanistan to Syria, and we Europeans are ready to step up our cooperation in all these fields."

Other issues Mogherini mentioned in the Xinhua interview where EU-China cooperation made sense included defence, support for the United Nations, free and fair trade, sustainable development, fighting climate change and promoting clean energy.

Whilst in China, Federica Mogherini will also meet a number of other Ministers as well as business representatives. She will also hold discussions with students at Tsinghua University.
