Following an invitation from the government of Togo, the European Commission has decided to deploy an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the Presidential elections scheduled to take place on 28 February 2010.

This observation mission was led by the Chief Observer Mr José Manuel Garcia-Margallo y Marfil, who is a member of the European Parliament (ES).

The Mission consisted of a chief observer and eleven experts, who arrived in the country over the last few weeks. They have been joined by 30 long-term observers, who were monitoring the election campaign and pre-election preparations throughout the country and also observed the voting and the post-election period. 80 short-term observers arrived shortly before polling day.

This observation mission complemented other action take by the European Union in support of the elections in Togo.
