EU election observation mission to Nigeria in 2011

At the invitation of the Government of Nigeria, the European Union established a mission to observe the presidential, legislative, state and governorship elections there on April 2011.

Elections took place in the following order: on 9 April for the National Assembly (Senate and House of Representatives), on 16 April for the Presidential office and on 26 April, 28 April and 6 May for Governorships and State Houses Assembly.

On election day, violence was not as intense as during previous elections. However, during the election campaign serious violent confrontations occurred. Alojz Peterle, Member of the European Parliament, was Chief Observer.

The observers were deployed throughout the country. They met government and electoral officials, candidates and political parties, civil society representatives and the media.
