“I just spoke with Staffan de Mistura [UN Special Envoy for Syria], coordinating the work of the UN and the European Union. It will be today a very important occasion for the ministers to adopt the Syria Strategy of the European Union which will be the basis for us to chair and host the Syria Conference from tomorrow onwards,” she said on arrival at the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg.
“There we expect to work on the humanitarian support. You know the European Union is the first humanitarian donor for Syria and the region. We will continue that and we will call on all the other partners in the world to keep the humanitarian support to Syrians – and the attention - I must say, because the situation still requires a coordinated and full support.”
Ministers will also focus on the second pillar of the Brussels conference: supporting the political talks in Geneva, and the work being coordinated by Staffan de Mistura to achieve a Syrian-agreed transition and political solution to the conflict.
Third, today and at the conference "we will start to look at ways in which the international community can start to get ready for the post-conflict moment. We are not there yet. This will start only when a credible political transition will be underway, but the international community has to start getting ready for this,” Mogherini added.
Ministers will today also discuss the situation in Yemen and Libya, and will hold a working lunch with the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit.
The High Representative also expressed her sympathy for the victims of the landslides in Colombia and congratulated Aleksandar Vučić, for his victory in the Serbian presidential election.
