Statement by the Spokesperson on the murder of United Nations experts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Text

The United Nations has confirmed the death of two members of the Group of Experts on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Swedish national Zaida Catalán and US citizen Michael Sharp.

They had been reported missing in Kasai province since 12 March, along with four Congolese support staff who had been accompanying them. Their mission was to investigate human rights abuses in the region, in support of the restoration of peace and security in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The European Union extends its sincere condolences to the families and friends of the two experts and their Congolese support staff.

The Kasai region has become the scene of serious violence and human rights abuses. The perpetrators must be sought and brought to justice.
