Federica Mogherini discusses better management of migration flows with Grandi, Swing
Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission met today the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, and the Director General of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), William Swing, in the margins of the Munich Security Conference. They discussed at length the cooperation on the European Union's initiatives to better manage the migration flows, particularly through Libya, and the willingness to step up the work.
In this regard, they exchanged views on the urgency to address the needs of migrants and refugees in detention camps in Libya, and the possible initiatives that could be taken forward. Mogherini stressed the readiness of the European Union to increase its support to both agencies, also when it comes to the cooperation with countries of origin and transit and the work the European Union is doing through the migration compacts with five African priority countries.
The European Union policies on migration, and in particular the partnership approach established both with the IOM and with countries of origin and transit, have been discussed also during the session on 'Migration and Security' High Representative Mogherini participated in at the Munich Security Conference. The European Union, she underlined, has created its innovative way for a sustainable, respectful and humane management of the migration flows that is setting an example, also for the United Nations Global Compacts on migration and on refugees.
